BLANKETS OF COURAGE EVENT
Blanket makers – including nurses, volunteers and the Charm City Roller Derby Girls -
Gather at St. Joseph Medical Center to
Create Blankets that Wrap Cancer Patients in Physical and Spiritual Warmth
| WHAT: |
Recovery room nurses who take care of cancer patients at St. Joseph Medical Center have been making colorful fleece “Blankets of Courage” since last April to wrap cancer patients in physical and spiritual warmth. The blankets not only provide comfort to patients undergoing chemotherapy following surgeries such as mastectomy, biopsy or port-a-cath-site creation, but help ward off the chills brought on by chemotherapy.
A large blanket-making public event will take place; more than 125 staff, friends, family and patients of St. Joseph Medical Center plan to participate including the Charm City Roller Derby girls! So far, the project has created more than 600 blankets, made by nurses from St. Joseph’s PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) and volunteers, and the Sunday event will yield many, many more!

Each blanket is personalized by embroidering the patient’s name on it. Fundraisers and donated materials have helped supply the nurses with the necessary materials for making the blankets.
